The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today issued an order prohibiting several organisations from conducting events to commemorate the death anniversary of Rasaiah Parthipan, alias Thileepan, in several areas in Colombo in a manner causing disturbances to the public.

The Court issued this order taking into consideration the requests made by police, citing that several organisations, including the Christian Solidarity Movement, are planning to commemorate Thileepan today (19) within Colombo Fort, Slave Island, and Kollupitiya areas, causing disturbances to the public.

Thileepan died on September 26, 1987, during a hunger strike in which he presented five demands to the Indian government with the hope that they would exert pressure on the Sri Lankan government to meet those demands.
