Young couple die by suicide in Jaffna following dispute over drug use

A young couple in Jaffna died by suicide on Tuesday following problems linked to drug use.

Police said the 23-year-old man, identified as Abithab Sudhakar, had recently begun using drugs with friends.

After learning about this, his girlfriend, Sukhitha, repeatedly questioned him about his drug use, leading to frequent arguments between the couple.

According to statements given to police by family members, the woman killed herself because of his drug use. The man, distressed by her death, subsequently consumed a large quantity of drugs and also died by suicide.

Post-mortem examinations were conducted at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.

Jaffna Police recorded statements from relatives of the two deceased and are continuing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The bodies were later released to their families.
