British Instagrammer's plea against deportation dismissed

The writ petition filed by British woman Instagrammer Kayleigh Fraser challenging the authorities' decision to deport her from Sri Lanka was today dismissed by the Court of Appeal.

Kayleigh Fraser, who had been documenting Sri Lanka’s anti-government protests on social media, filed this petition seeking an order to quash the decision of the Department of Immigration and Emigration to deport her in an arbitrary manner.

The Court of Appeal, Justice Sobhitha Rajakaruna, decided to dismiss the petition without formally issuing notices to the respondents.

The Department of Immigration and Emigration had decided to terminate the visa issued to Fraser for violating visa conditions and had informed her to leave the country by the 15th of August.

The petitioner had named the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration, the Department of Immigration and Emigration and the Attorney General as respondents in the application.

This petition has been filed through Attorney-at-law Nagananda Kodituwakku.
