The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the 21st amendment to the constitution.

Based on the 19th amendment and the 20th amendment to the constitution, the government now envisages curtailing powers arrogated by the executive President.

The 19th amendment introduced by the previous UNP/Yahapalana government clipped the powers of the President and shifted them to the Cabinet and Parliament.

The Cabinet of Ministers today appointed a Ministerial committee to examine the new 21st amendment.

The present regime introduced the 20th amendment after scrapping the 19th amendment vested enormous powers to the elected executive President.

The youth struggle launched two weeks ago compelled the government to rethink its strategies and go before the IMF, seeking an economic bailout package for the current financial crisis the country is facing.
