Chief Magistrate rejects a Police request to prevent protestors from entering Viharamahadevi Park

Colombo Chief Magistrate rejected a request by the Cinnamon Gardens Police to issue an order preventing protesters from entering close to the Viharamahadevi Park on Tuesday (9) While refusing to issue an order as requested by Police, Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe observed that police have the power to prevent an event of committing any offence or causing any disturbance to the public. The Cinnamon Gardens Police told the court that police intelligence has received information that political parties, civil society activists and trade unions are preparing to organise a massive protest on Tuesday after being members of unlawful assembly.
