A civil society activist, Chirantha Amarasinghe, was arrested by police yesterday evening near the State Intelligence Service headquarters in Colombo.
Chirantha Amarasinghe’s lawyer confirmed that his client was arrested while attempting to submit a right-to-information request concerning a report issued about him.
The sources said Amarasinghe was thereafter taken to the Cinnamon Gardens Police Station, where he is being held in police custody on unspecified charges.
Amarasinghe was previously arrested for urging the public to protest against former President Gotabhaya Rajapakse by posting “gotafail” back in November 2020.
Amarasinghe had filed a Fundamental Rights application against the Criminal Investigations Department over the previous arrest, claiming it to be unconstitutional. On March 22, 2023, that matter is scheduled to be supported.
