The Court of Appeal today issued an order transferring the case filed against Shashi Weerawansa, alias Udayanthi Ranasinghe, the wife of National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa, from Colombo Chief Magistrate to any other Magistrate in Hulftsdorp.
In a transfer application before the Court of Appeal, Shashi Weerawansa sought an order transferring the case from the Colombo Chief Magistrate to any other Magistrate, citing that the conduct of the Chief Magistrate was prejudiced against her.
The CID had filed a case against Shashi Weerawansa before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly submitting forged documents to obtain two passports.
On May 27th, last year, Shashi Weerawansa was found guilty in the first case, and she was sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 100,000 for obtaining two passports, including a diplomatic passport, by submitting forged documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
However, she was released on bail upon filing an appeal in the High Court challenging the judgement of the Magistrate’s Court.
