The Director General of Sports gives an undertaking to the Court of Appeal on the election of the Football Federation

The Director General of Sports today gave an undertaking to the Court of Appeal that the elections for the Sri Lanka Football Federation will be held within 69 days commencing today.

Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardena PC, appearing for Sports Authorities, gave this undertaking in connection with a writ petition filed by the President and Secretary of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka.

Jaswar Omar Lebbe and Upali Hewage filed this petition challenging the legality of the gazette notification issued by the Sports Minister dated September 22, 2022.

Meanwhile, Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardena further informed the court that the Minister will appoint an Election Committee within 14 days to look into the activities relating to the elections.

The Court of Appeal bench comprised Justices Sobhitha Rajakaruna and Dhammika Ganepola.

Attorney-at-law Eraj de Silva and Daminda Wijerathne appeared for the petitioners. Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardena appeared for the Attorney General.
