The government has sought a multi-party consensus to set up foreign universities in Sri Lanka in a bid to overcome the problems faced by Sri Lankan students overseas due to the foreign exchange crisis in the country.
Almost 300,000 students are studying in overseas higher education institutions, requiring nearly two billion dollars every year.
In these circumstances, the government, in order to minimise the expenditure incurred for overseas education, has sought a multi-party consensus to allow foreign universities to operate in Sri Lanka.
