Gammanpila

Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila toldParliament today that the government would hold talks with ambassadors representing all oil exporting countries to seek their assistance andto ensure continuous supply of fuel to Sri Lanka during next three months on credit.

Gammanpila said the meeting is likely to be held on the15th of March and that their assistance will be sought in this connection.

The Minister was responding to a question raised by former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Wickremesinghe asked what action has been taken by the government to ensure continuous fuel supply to the country in the next three months. He pointed out that fuel prices are poised to rise further in the global market owing to the current conflict situation in Ukraine. He said the price of an oil barrel has gone up to 99$ on Tuesday indicating it would exceed above 100$.

Mr. Wickremesinghe suggested that it would be prudent to pay for oil now anticipating further increases in the market.

Gammanpila said payments have been made for two out of the three fuel shipments in anchored in Sri Lankan ports and arrangements are underway to settle for the other one as well.

The Finance Ministry has agreed to find necessary dollars for the other shipment also, Gammanpila said.
