August 18, 2022

Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled the country last month amidst public protests, has applied for a US Green Card to return to the United States and settle there with his wife and son.
Lawyers for Gotabaya Rajapksa in the United States had already begun processing his application for a Green Card. They are of the view that he was eligible to apply due to his wife, Ioma Rajapaksa, being a US citizen.
His lawyers in Colombo will also submit additional documents enabling him to accomplish the procedure.
The former President, who is in Thailand with his wife, will return to Sri Lanka on Aug. 25. Earlier, he was planning to remain in Thailand until the end of November.
Government sources said the former president will be accorded the facilities of a former president upon his arrival in the country.
