Dr Gayashan Nawananda, Monaragala District SLPP Parliamentarian, yesterday filed a petition before the Supreme Court seeking a declaration that he has not ceased to be a Member of Parliament.
Dr Nawananda requests that the Democratic Left Front’s decision to expel him from the party be overturned.
He also wants a declaration that he is still and will remain a member of Parliament.
Gayashan Nawananda has cited Democratic Left Front General Secretary Wasudewa Nanayakkara, SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam, Chairman of the Election Commission, members of the Election Commission, the Secretary General of Parliament and several others as respondents.
The petitioner said the decision taken by the Democratic Left Front to expel him from the membership of the party is unlawful and apparently a violation of the provisions of the party constitution. He insisted that he was elected to Parliament to represent the SLPP.
The petitioner stated that following his decision to support the government, the Democratic Left Front had taken a decision to expel him from the party.
