The National Child Protection Authority arrested the suspects for subjecting nine students to cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment over an incident relating to stealing money belonging to a school teacher.
However, Colombo Additional Magistrate Keminda Perera ordered the release of the Deputy Principal of the same school and another police constable (driver of a police jeep) on bail after taking into consideration the lack of evidence against them.

The National Child Protection Authority informed the court that the suspects were arrested for causing injuries to the students by severely caning them at the school library and using electric shock treatment inside the police Jeep.
