President’s Counsel Gamini Marapanaappearing on behalf of Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, today requested the Colombo High Court for a short date for the case against Rajapaksa since he may need to travel overseas.
Accordingly, the case against Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa and five others under Money Laundering Act was fixed for April 28 by High Court Judge Nawaratne Marasinghe.
President’s Counsel Gamini Marapanaappearing for MP Namal Rajapaksa said his client was not present in court since he needs to attend parliament sessions.
Marapana moved the court to give a short date facilitating his client to get the court’s permission if he needs to travel overseas.
The Attorney General had filed indictments against six accused of alleged involvement in money laundering amounting to Rs.30 million through Gowers Corporate Services (Pvt) Limited.
The High Court permitted the prosecution to proceed with the trial in the absentia of the second and sixth accused, in terms of section 241 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The Attorney General had filed indictments against Namal Rajapaksa, Indika Karunajeewa, Sujani Bogollagama, Iresha Silva, NithyaSenani Samaranayake and Gowers Corporate Services (Pvt) Limited on 11 counts under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act for their alleged involvement in money laundering amounting to Rs.30 million by a company named (Gowers Corporate Services (Pvt) Limited) owned by Namal Rajapaksa between 2013 and 2014.
It was reported that Gowers Corporate Services (Pvt) Limited of Colombo 5, is providing coordinating services to Sri Lankan Airlines.
The FCID had initiated investigations into this matter following a complaint by Voice AgainstCorruption Convener Wasantha Samarasinghe.
