People defied curfew to join spontaneous protests against the government in several areas this evening.

Maharagama, Homagama, Katubedda, and Yakkala are some of such areas where people gathered to protest while the curfew was in force. People protested inside supermarkets, also as they hurried to buy provisions following the imposition of curfew at 6.00 pm. Meanwhile, the President has issued a gazette notification invoking section 16 of the Public Security Act, curbing mobility and banning the general public from entering public places without proper authority given by authorized personnel.
