Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abaeywardene has told the BBC that the President had left the country for a country closer to Sri Lankan shores.

The President is expected to be back in Sri Lanka on Wednesday, probably to submit his resignation to the Speaker of the House.

Meanwhile, Party Leaders decided to convene Parliament on the 15th of July, after the President resigns on the 13th instant.

Party leaders agreed that nominations to elect a new President are likely to be received on the 19 th, and the Elections fixed for the 20th.

The party leaders have demanded the resignation of the Prime Minister, but the Prime Minister has remained silent without making any statement.

Reports said SLMC Leader Rauff Hakeem and TNA spokesman M.A Sumanthiran had a disagreement with the Prime Minister.
