The Rev. Fr. Jeewantha Peiris, who became an active participant in the “GotaGoGama” protest, is to be surrendered before Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court on Friday (12), counsel told the court.
Attorney-at-law Udara Muhandiramge today filed two motions on behalf of Fr. Jeewantha Peiris in respect of two court cases, enabling his client to surrender before the court.
However, Magistrate Thilina Gamage instructed the defence to file this motion on a date accommodated by relevant police stations for court affairs with notices to the relevant police officers.
Accordingly, President’s Counsel Rienzie Arsekularatne, appearing for Fr. Jeewantha Peiris, informed the court his client will be surrendered before the court next Friday (12).
The Fort Police and Slave Island Police have filed two separate B reports against Fr. Jeewantha Peiris over two incidents relating to the Galle Face protests. The court has already issued an order preventing Fr. Peiris from leaving the country.
Fr. Jeewantha Peiris has also filed a Fundamental Rights petition in the Supreme Court seeking an order preventing police and tri-forces from arresting him regarding the events that took place during the protests held at the Galle Face Green.
