Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene today announced officially that President Gotabaya Rajapksa has resigned.

He also said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is to act as the President for the time being. Parliament on the 20th will elect the new President for the remaining period of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s presidency.

The Speaker summoned Parliament for the 16th and requested all Parliamentarians to participate.

Meanwhile, a party leaders’ meeting is in progress to decide on a new Prime Minister.

Informed sources said the SJB nominated Sajith Premadasa as the new Prime Minister.
