Sri Lanka on Monday will begin construction of a domestically funded 26-km transmission line to connect a 100-megawatt wind power project in Mannar to the national grid, with the project estimated to cost 2.5 billion Sri Lankan rupees.

Construction will begin in Mullikulam in the Mannar district, where the wind power project is being developed.

The transmission project will include a 220-kV double-circuit line linking the Mannar 220/33-kV grid substation with the proposed Mullikulam 220-kV metering substation.

Officials said the project is intended to transmit electricity generated by the wind farm to the national grid and help improve the stability of the country's power system.

Authorities said the project is also expected to support the integration of more renewable energy into the national electricity system.
