New Governor of the Central Bank, Dr Nandalal Weerasinghe, said that his initial task is to stop the economy from sliding at a breakneck speed and bring in controls. He compared it to a car going downhill without brakes in place.
It would be a difficult task to perform this exercise overnight, he said
“It will take some time.” The governor said a technical team would participate in the initial discussions with the IMF in Washington.
Dr Weerasinghe inculcated some confidence in the people when he said the Central Bank would work independently, devoid of any political interference.
I am here to serve the people, not any politician. He said.
