The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered that Wasantha Mudalige, convener of the Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF), and Ven. Galwewa Siridhamma Thera should be held in remand custody until the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) obtains advice from the Attorney General.
Two student activists were detained under the PTA for 90 days under Detention Orders issued by President Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as the Minister of Defense.
Colombo Additional Magistrate T. N. L. Mahawatta made this order pursuant to a request made by the Terrorist Investigation Division.
On November 10, the Supreme Court issued an interim order directing the authorities to immediately produce Wasantha Mudalige before a magistrate in terms of the law.
The Supreme Court’s two-judge bench, comprising Justices Vijith Malalgoda and S. Thurairaja, further decided to grant leave to proceed with the Fundamental Rights Petition for violating fundamental rights guaranteed under Articles 12(1), 13(1), and 13(2) of the Constitution.
