IUSF convener Wasantha Mudalige and two others have been given detention orders by the Defense Ministry, according to Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa. The orders call for their 90-day detention and questioning.
On August 19 during a protest in Colombo, the police detained Wasantha Mudalige, Hashan Jeevantha Gunathilake, and Galwewa Siridhamma Thero. They were held for 72 hours for questioning in accordance with the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
According to earlier police statements, the IGP has directed that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) conduct the probe and continue interrogation of the three suspects.
If it is revealed that they were involved in any terrorist activities, the IGP has also ordered the CID to hand over the investigations to the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID).
The Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for the United Nation however expressed alarm over the matter.
