STF deploys 17 teams against organised crime

Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala told Parliament on Friday that 17 Special Task Force (STF) teams had been deployed continuously to counter organised criminal activity, as many gangs were being directed from overseas.
Responding to questions over the rise in killings linked to organised crime and drug trafficking, Wijepala said investigations had been carried out into the increase in violence.
He said many of the killings stemmed from conflicts between organised criminal groups and drug traffickers.
Wijepala also referred to the recent killing of two children who, he said, had no connection to the criminal groups involved, describing the incident as deeply regrettable.
The Minister said the Government’s priority was to prevent such conflicts and ensure public safety.
He said law enforcement mechanisms had been strengthened to arrest criminals operating within Sri Lanka, while steps were also being taken to bring back suspects who were directing criminal activity from abroad.
Although some operational details could not be disclosed in Parliament, Wijepala said special teams were working with police authorities in countries where wanted suspects were believed to be staying.
He said the escalation of disputes among drug traffickers had contributed significantly to the increase in killings, but added that the number of homicides linked to such activity had declined this year.
Wijepala said the Government was also strengthening the legal framework against organised crime and drug trafficking.
He referred to recently introduced legislation on organised crime, saying tougher laws were necessary because criminal networks and narcotics traffickers had caused serious harm to society.
The Minister said amendments to existing laws, expanded investigations and stronger court processes were being pursued alongside police operations.
The Sri Lanka Police, STF and other investigative agencies were continuing coordinated operations against organised criminal groups, he said.
